Get out and vote!

Can you hear that noise off in the distance growing louder? That’s the sound of another election day drawing near! It’s the culmination of months of town halls, debates, interviews and billions of dollars in political advertising.

It’s the time when each of us gets to participate in this American experiment and choose our own representation. It’s a chance when ordinary Americans have the power to affect the course of our country.

Early voting begins tomorrow, October 29, and continues until November 6. Any registered voter can visit the Sullivan County Government Center at 100 North Street in Monticello and cast their ballot early in this year’s midterm elections.

Visit sullivanny.us/Departments/Elections/EarlyVoting to check their hours of operation.

Of course on Tuesday, November 8, everyone can vote at their own particular polling site.

Every election cycle is important, but this year feels especially so as it will impact us both locally and nationally for years to come. On the ballot are candidates for Governor, Comptroller, Attorney General, United States Senator, State Supreme Court Justice, Representatives in Congress, State Senator, Member of Assembly and Family Court Judge.

Finally, the Environmental Bond Act on the ballot this year relates to billions of dollars in funding for clean water and infrastructure programs.

Anyone can see sample ballots on the County’s Board of Elections website or inside an upcoming edition of the Sullivan County Democrat. It’s important to familiarize yourself with the ballot to eliminate any confusion about candidates or propositions inside the polling booth.

Voters across the country are energized and motivated. According to preliminary data from the nonpartisan United States Election Project, millions of Americans have already cast their vote early in certain states.

The right to vote is something no American citizen should ever take for granted. It’s not just our right but our civic duty. Generations throughout our history have fought and sacrificed not only to preserve your right to vote but to expand it to more and more Americans.

Don’t let them down. Get out and vote!
