Happy New Year

I came close to not having a Christmas tree this year. It would have been the first time in my life of not having one. Even though I had been a very good girl, it was Christmas Eve and Santa still hadn't come through with a tree. Santa's helper, my son Michael had been sick and even though he had recovered, he had a lot of catching up to do. My daughter, Patricia and my friend Leisha both suggested that I just put three poinsettias in the window where the tree usually goes but I resisted that idea. Then lo and behold there appeared Michael with a tree and it was free to boot because Stu Leonard's had given up on selling anymore trees. They weren't as persistent as I was.

I remember past Christmas's when we blocked off the living room door with a tree that reached the ceiling and another year when we had an artificeal white one with only red ornaments and tinsel on it. That year we took a picture of the whole family in front of the tree with Santa. Some people wanted to know why my husband Jim wasn't in the picture. I will leave that for you to figure out.

Another year Jim brought home three trees for us to choose from and one was worse than the other so we rejected all of them and piled into Patricia's Volkswagon in search of a better one. But even the free ones had been cut up and we were about to give up when we discovered a beautiful free one placed at the side of the road, which must have been part of an office Christmas party and we rescued it to be part of another one.

As we grew older, Jim campaigned for an artificial tree

but I stuck with the desire to have a live one. Friends told me that it was their husbands who wanted to have live ones but they, as wives, desired to have artificial ones as there was no mess of fallen needles to be cleaned up.

I've made my usual New Year's resolution which is not to make any resolutions. That way I don't disappoint myself when I fail to keep them. As far as a Happy New Year goes, this year has to be better than last year, because I don't feel it can get any worse. So let's all look on the bright side and have a Happy New Year!
