Heart-A-Thon raises over $103K

MONTICELLO –– The 45th Annual WSUL Heart-A-Thon returned to Resorts World Catskills on Friday, raising $103,198 by day’s end, which will benefit several health-related causes.

These causes include a treadmill for the cardiac rehab and some portable cardiac monitors at Garnet Health Medical Center – Catskills; The Warrior Teens Program and an outdoor fitness pad in Monticello with Sullivan 180; A Single Bite’s Real Food School Education Program, and Building Sullivan’s Healthcare Workforce Scholarships with SUNY Sullivan.

“The 45th Annual 98.3 WSUL Heart-A-Thon is a great example of the power that local radio has in bringing an entire community together,” said Bold Gold Media New York General Manager and Director of Sales Dawn Ciorciari. “In this case, to benefit the prevention, education, and treatment of Heart Disease in Sullivan County.

“To date, this annual event has raised over $2.5 million in the fight against heart disease,” she added.  “This would not be possible without an amazing local radio team, the committee made up of community leaders and benefiting organizations, the hundreds of Heart locations, the sponsors, our host Resorts World Catskills, and most importantly, those who made a donation.”

Les Kristt, chair of the Heart-A-Thon Committee, said the event once again showed how Sullivan County can be “so giving and warm year after year.”

“In conjunction with Dawn Ciorciari of Bold Gold Media, our committee of about 25 began planning last October,” said Kristt. “Along with a myriad of sponsors, we proceeded to educate the public about our new program of Prevention, Education and Treatment. Three persons in particular, of leading County institutions, helped us to spread the word –– Roberta Byron-Lockwood of the Sullivan Catskills Visitors Association, Jay Quaintance of SUNY Sullivan and Jerry Dunlavey of Garnet Health.

“On event day, our county and beyond turned out to be even more generous than we had hoped,” continued Kristt. “We received pledges and ‘heart money’ of over $103,000 to fund some well needed initiatives. The Heart-A-Thon not only brings in money, but is a countywide celebration that brings a great deal of joy, happiness and hope to so many that live here. I thank everyone who helped to make this year’s event such an incredible success.”

Donations can still be made to benefit the 45th annual Heart-A-Thon through WSUL’s website.

Blood Drive

Also taking place next door was a New York Blood Center blood drive organized by Sullivan County’s three Rotary clubs (Liberty, Monticello and Livingston Manor). Blood Drive Chairperson and Monticello Rotarian Lori Orestano-James reports that 68 people gave blood and 54 usable pints were collected.

“It was a huge success,” she said.

The three clubs will be holding another blood drive and mental health fair at Resorts World Catskills on May 20, as part of Rotary’s Day of Service, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The link to register will be up on New York Blood Center’s website as the date gets closer.
