All sorts of end of summer events are now taking place in rapid succession. This summer has been quiet in Highland and we have not seen the deluge of tourist we usually have and I’m not sure why this is, but it won’t stop us from having a lot of community events to attend.

Sullivan County is the proud home of many “motorheads”- a US and Canadian slang used to identify car, truck, and motorcycle enthusiasts. Every summer and fall the are all types of car shows which are always great fun to attend.

There is a community car show coming up called “Cars and Coffee” which will take place on Sunday, September 1st from 9-2pm. Its will be held in the parking lot of the Hungry Goat Café and Creamery located on NY-97 and Route 55 in Barryville.

The charge fee for spectators is $5.00 and $10.00 if you want to enter a car into the show. All proceeds go to “Hope with Horsepower” a suicide prevention and mental health awareness charity. A worthy cause and a local family friendly event.

St Anns Catholic Church in Shohola  is the home parish for many residents of the Town of Highland and they will be hosting their annual  “Summers Last Blast” Chicken BBQ- a Family Fun Day On Sunday September 1st from 1-4pm. So far this summer,  for one reason or another I missed all of the local organization’s BBQs so this is one of my very last opportunities before Fall and the  cold weather sets in.

The dinner features a half chicken, corn on the cob, potatoes, Cole slaw and a roll. Ticket are $15.00 and can be purchased from the church after mass or from parishioners. This event absolutely always sells out. In addition to the dinner, there will be kid’s games, a craft fair, themed gift baskets, beer, ice cream, raffles, hot dogs, and funnel cake. The BBQ will be held at the Lackawaxen Firehouse Field on route 590 in Lackawaxen just over the Roebling Bridge.

The Barryville Chamber of Commerce, Jeff Bank and the  Marion O’Neill Culture Club will be holding an End of Summer Celebration at Sand Beach on Monday, Labor Day September 2nd from 1-4pm.(rain date is Saturday, September 7th) The first one hundred guests will get free hot dogs and hamburgers compliments of the River Eatery food truck.

This is a family event and there will be games and activities for both adults and children and live music provided by the River Ramblers. And complimentary admission is being provided by Sand Beach to use their beautiful lake access beach which is the most fabulous way to take a dip into the magnificent clear crisp waters of Highland

Lake as a perfect way to close out your summer season. Just think in a few months’ time guys will be ice fishing there.  For more information go to the Barryville Chamber’s website.

The Lackawaxen Township Volunteer Fire Department Station#31 will be holding their Annual Field Day on Saturday August 24th starting at 4pm. During the day from noon-4pm there will be a special event car show. Starting at 4pm til 9pm the children’s free Bounce House Party will be in full swing.

The Greeley Volunteer Fire Department will be holding their chicken BBQ from 4-6pm and D.J. Spaide will have the music on tap from 4-6pm. Starting at 7:30-11pm the Fabulous 45’s Band will perform. There will be great food and a full-service bar, free kiddie play rides, games of chance and a 50/50. There will be a fireworks show starting at dusk. Admission is free and the rain date is Sunday, August 25th.

I have been to the Field Day in years past and it has everything wonderful going on and it’s an all-out great event. The Lackawaxen Fireman’s Field is located at 774 Route 590 in Lackawaxen PA. For more information call Ben at 570-685-3450.
