October 10 — It was a beautiful crisp Fall weather last weekend so I went down to Barryville to check out the General Jerk’s first ever Flea Market.

It was busy with about a dozen vendors selling all sorts of unique things, handmade carpets, vinyl records, kids’ books, tie-dyed clothing some impressive vintage clothing, very nice antique kitchen ware, Richard Malenky had beautiful fabrics and baskets from the years he and Nancy lived as scientists in Africa. The Barryville General was packed with shoppers and General Jerk was serving food.

There was music and they had a fire pit going because it was a little on the cool side. In all it was a lovely Flea Market and they will be holding others. Eric and Sharne Komoroff, the owners of the Barryville General, have done a terrific job getting their business up and running with hard work and they stuck to their guns about offering delicious healthy foods while both continue to be so supportive of the local community.

The Barryville area was packed with people walking around supporting the Town’s small businesses which are truly the backbone of the Highland community- and every one of them pays their taxes and brings much needed revenue into the Town. While in the area I walked to the Cul-de sac on Route 97 by the Shohola Bridge to check out the progress of the mural being painted on the road.

Last week volunteers managed to paint the bright base colors of the mural that features flowers and fish but there is still work to get it completed. Even so, the mural attracted a slew of visitors to the site checking out the progress with several children running around and exploring all the details. So already through this public art mural project the site has been revitalized.

Sponsored by the Barryville Chamber of Commerce, along with The Delaware Company, the mural and other Delaware River beautification projects won the Silver Feather Award from the Sullivan County Renaissance and a prize of $100,000!

By the way, the Chamber and the Barryville Farmers’ Market will be sponsoring a Trunk and Treat at the Cul-De-Sac on October 29th as part of the Market’s Halloween & Harvest Fest from 10-1pm. They are still looking for more participants for the Trunk & Treat.

I did it last year and decorated my car and the kids, parents, and dogs all in some terrific costumes marched over in the Halloween parade and had a great time. If interested in participating in the Trunk and Treat, please contact Mary Jones Mellett on Facebook or email her at mjonesmellett@gmail.com or call 917-593-0307.

Since my pal Mike Edison was performing at the Barryville Farmers’ Market, I hustled on down to see what was happening. Mike an author with several books to his credit, (including his bestselling book- “Sympathy For the Drummer, Why Charlie Watts Matters”) a magazine editor and long-time radio host is certainly no slouch when it comes to being a successful internationally known musician.

At the Farmers’ Market it was Mike Edison and the Rocket Train featuring Rebecca DeRosa on drums and a guest appearance by Jeremy Burrell on harmonica. With a mix of oldies, blues, gospel and garage punk favorites and new music Mike and his band had everyone happily vibing along with the band. His next appearance with the Rocket Train Band will be at Burn Brae Mansion- Haunted Dark Forest in Glen Spey on October 29th.For more information go to MikeEdison.com or his Facebook page.
