There is a new face at the front desk of the Sunshine hall Free Library. Starting last month, Ema Amato is the first ever Intern from the Eldred Central School District. The Library got a generous grant from the Grace Johansen Memorial Foundation that funds programs and projects that engage young people with activities in their communities.

The Foundation is in honor of the memory of Grace Johansen who was born, raised in Narrowsburg. Ms Johansen dedicated her life to volunteerism, her community service, was a founding member of the Narrowburg branch of the Western-Sullivan Library, the Tusten Historical Society and served as the Society’s president for over twenty-five years. Upon her death the Foundation was formed to further her mission of providing scholarship opportunities to our local graduates.

After interviewing several candidates Ema Amato from Eldred was selected. Ema is an accomplished young woman and certainly someone that the Grace Johansen Foundation would want to support. An accomplished senior with great grades and on the Principals list, Ema also is a member of the Student Council as a Social Media Specialist, the Book Club, Art Club, and the Gay Straight Alliance.

One of the very cool aspects of Ema’s Internship besides getting to know and working with the wonderful staff at the Sunshine Library and learning how the Library functions, Ema will get to formulate a community service project to enhance the experience of the Library’s many patrons. Ema will be working at the Library’s front desk, which is at the heart of the Library’s operations, so stop by and wish her well as she undertakes this exciting opportunity.

St. Patrick’s Day is around the corner and these days there are very few public celebrations happening. Gone is the town parade and gone also is the Yulan Fire Department’s corned beef and cabbage dinner-it hasn’t happened for a couple of years now. But, thanks to the Lawrence Lounge in Yulan they will be having a fun and very modest “unofficial” parade on Sunday, March 12th. The parade gets underway after the 11:15 Mass at St. Anthony’s Church in Yulan and then the priest comes and blesses the parade participants- so around noon start time is a safe bet.

As usual there will be decorated cars, trucks and floats (after a fashion.) I have attended this parade several times, and I can assure you it is one of the shortest parade routes ever going from the four corners in Yulan to the Lounge, but it is a down home fun event and, if you ever wanted to march in a St. Patricks Day parade this is surely the opportunity.

According to a Facebook post by Larry Farmer who now lives in the Big Easy, in New Orleans but will be coming back to town for the parade- he has no clue about the identity of the “mystery special lady” leading this year’s parade. The Lawrence Lounge has a Facebook page and hopefully more details will be posted there. It’s a fun event and people do come all dolled up in their finest greenery to celebrate their Irish heritage-myself included. The Lounge has great drinks and a nice menu and usually has a special on a corned beef and cabbage meal on Parade Day so see you there!
