WURTSBORO –– Former Town of Mamakating Highway Superintendent Robert Hufcut, 56, of Wurtsboro, was sentenced to 22 years in prison, followed by 20 years of post-release supervision, after having been convicted after jury trial in the Orange County Court of Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child in the First Degree.

The sentence was announced by Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler on Tuesday.

According to Hoovler, Hufcut will also be registered as a sex offender under the New York Sex Offender Registration Act (SORA).  Hoovler added that a jury found, “beyond a reasonable doubt, that Hufcut had, over a period of time not less than three months, engaged in two or more acts of sexual conduct with a child less than thirteen years old.”

As the Democrat had previously reported, the incidents in question occurred over 20 years ago.

“The sentence imposed on this defendant is justice considering the victim will live with the aftermath of the defendant’s conduct for life,” said Hoovler. “I thank the law enforcement officers involved in the investigation of this case that helped to assure that the defendant’s actions were brought to light.”

“I praise the courageous survivor in this case who came forward and testified about the traumatic events suffered at the hands of the defendant,” continued Hoovler. “Cases such as these remain a priority of my Office, and we will not allow the challenges inherent in these types of cases to stand in the way of our pursuit of justice.”

District Attorney Hoovler also commended Assistant District Attorney Michael Purcell who prosecuted the case.
