Last day of summer. Greetings faithful readers of the Kenoza Lake news. Today is the first day of fall. My husband Ray loves fall as he is an avid bow hunter; however, I prefer the first day of spring to the first day of fall.
Ray and I just got back home from truly wonderful 12-day, 4,888-mile road trip. We visited Iowa’s Field of Dreams, South Dakota’s Wall Drug Store and Mount Rushmore, the Cody Buffalo Bill Museum, Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Tetons, and Jackson Hole. I was smitten by the Bison, truly smitten. The amount of corn and cattle was amazing. Ray is a terrific driver.
Faithful readers of the column know that I frequently write about Pucky Huddle Road, in western Bethel. Folks that motor along Route 17B have passed the above photo of the former MacArthur family abode. Almost every year since 2007, I tell Ray that the house will not survive the winter. Now, I think it won’t make the winter. Folks frequently stop and take photos of the house. It defies the law of nature, given the uneven ground it sits on. Part of the roof fell off a few weeks ago. I think it would be a wonderful idea for John Conway, the Sullivan County Historian, to write a column about the history of the Newburgh-Cochecton turnpike and the MacArthur homestead. Just an idea!
October in Sullivan County means Roast Beef dinner time. The Kenoza Lake Fire Company will have their roast beef dinner on Saturday, October 8th (take outs only) and the Jeffersonville Fire Company will have their dinner October 15. I just learned that the Youngsville Fire Company will NOT be having their dinner this year. I am truly saddened. The Youngsville Fire Company may have it in the spring. I know it is more work for the eat in dinner and I understand the firemen make more money with the takeout, but from a social and community standpoint it is sad. Folks love to go out and visit and see their friends and neighbors. Last week I was the Sullivan County Volunteer Firefighters parade in White Lake. The weather was spectacular. It was TERRIFIC to see folks out there visiting both prior to, during and after the parade in Bethel Woods. THANK YOU to all our terrific firefighters
SAVE THE DATE – Thursday, Nov. 17 there will be an informational session on the new concealed carry laws in Kauneonga Lake. The session will include a certified trainer for the new 16 hour required training. Stay tuned for more details.
I had some hummingbirds at my feeder on Wednesday, September 21st. I am keeping my feeder out and filled with high octane nectar. Last year, 2021, September 27 was the last day for my hummingbirds.
There will be no Kenoza Lake United Church service at the Kenoza Lake church on Sunday, October 15. Rather there will be a joint service in White Sulphur Springs that day, at 10 a.m. The Kenoza Lake Administrative Board met earlier this week. The cost of fuel oil was discussed. It was decided to resurrect our loose change, special heating fund. So, folks, if you have some loose change around and you want to help a neighbor in need, please drop off your change at the Kenoza Lake church. If you can’t make it to the actual church service, we’ll also be having a change can in the bell room, which is not locked. This is going to be a very challenging winter for folks.
Nice to see that the Sullivan West school calendar for 2022/2023 has the 4th of July holiday on it, unlike last year where it omitted the July 4th holiday.
Let’s go Mets! Did I say Amazin? And I must, yes, must say that I hope that Aaron Judge breaks the Roger Maris record of 61 home runs.
