A gloomy, overcast day here in Bethel, weather wise. The sugar maple leaves have fallen off the trees. There are still some leaves on Japanese maple trees, with their brilliant red leaves. Oak trees and beech trees still have their golden and rusty color leaves.

I love watching Canada geese. I know that some people hate Canada geese. If you have some geese that reside on your lawn, I can understand why you feel that way. However, fortunately I don't have that situation. I love watching them land in a hay or corn field or pasture lot. My how they lock their wings and glide onto the ground! I have heard and seen several flocks, migrating south, high in the sky. We still have a number of Canada geese here, eating bugs and left-over corn. Soon they will be headed south as well.

Those of you who like to watch White Tail deer, know that this is the best time of the year to watch the deer and their mating rituals. The rut is shifting into high gear now. Fascinating to witness the mating rituals. Heads up if you are driving at night as caution is thrown to the wind when a buck is chasing a “hot” doe.

I try to support our local businesses. Last weekend I had the occasion of meeting James Loney who has the Sticky Fingers ice cream store in Kauneonga Lake. Not only does James sell ice cream, he also has delicious homemade soups and chili. Furthermore, James is a fellow Sullivan County news correspondent, writing the Smallwood news column! This year I fell in love with the ribs from Big Kev's in White Lake, next to the Dollar General. I understand that Big Kev's will be open until Thanksgiving. Also, they are taking orders for Thanksgiving turkeys. I am saddened to learn that the Bradenburg bakery is changing hands. Errol and Sarah Flynn started their bakery in Jeffersonville, before moving to Livingston Manor. They made the best stollen in the county. We will miss you. Also, I learned that Lorenzo's is closing. It is extremely hard to have a food establishment business during the best of times, nevertheless during the era of COVID 19.

Youngsville Roast Beef dinner on Saturday, October 31st, take out only, starts at 3:00 pm.

So, the folks who reside in Western Bethel, near Perry, Jaketown, Gabriel and Old Taylor Roads are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Broadband. The poles got upgraded a few months back. Two men were doing some installation along West Shore and Perry Road. I saw activity on Route 17B, near the Russell farm and the old Yasgur farm and Gabriel Farm. I checked and got confirmation that Old Taylor Road is still on the list for broadband.

Looks like yet another banner year for Winterberry. I love winterberry, sometimes known as Christmas berries.

The Kenoza Lake United Methodist Women plan to sell Krispy Kreme glazed and filled doughnuts on Election Day, at the Kenoza Lake Firehouse. Both will be sold for $8.00 each. There will be no soup or chili sale.

I normally do not report on political matters, however, I am making an exception. If you live in or drive through the Town of Bethel, you know that I am running for the Town of Bethel Tax Collector position. If you have not yet voted, I would appreciate your support on Election Day. Thank you!

You know that expression, “once in a blue moon”? We will have a blue moon on Saturday, October 31st, as this will be the second full moon in October.
