Kenoza Lake race raises money for good cause

KENOZA LAKE –– Runners and walkers took to the scenic and challenging Kenoza Lake course of the Turtle Trot 5K and 10K on Saturday morning. Race proceeds benefit families struck with catastrophic illnesses.

It was a banner year for the race, which is still relatively young, with 114 registered participants and 104 finishers.

“It was a great turnout,” said Race Director April Ackermann. “I was so excited to see everyone again after being virtual last year. Overall I am glad the weather held off and we did not have to deal with a thunderstorm. I cannot thank everyone enough for their support and help with making this event a success. The sponsors, participants, family and friends and businesses who donate raffle prizes and/or food/water help make this all possible.

“We also had participants from NY, PA, NJ, NC, SC, CA and VT,” Ackermann continued. “I was happy to see familiar faces and excited to see new faces this year. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves and will come back again next year.”

Winning the 10K was well-known runner Rob Roach with a time of 39:48.4. Jennifer Nolan and James Gann finished in second and third respectively.

On the 5K side, 12-year-old Aiden Fulton, a rising seventh grader at Sullivan West, impressed by taking first place in just over 28 minutes. He was able to hold off Melissa Hahl who finished about eight seconds later.

The young speedster runs 1-3 times a week. He started running in the third grade.

“It’s a hard course,” said Fulton. “I’ve done it before, and I didn’t think I was going to do as well as I did.”

This was Fulton’s first 5K victory, and he’ll surely be a runner to watch in the future.
