Lady Bears suffer worst loss of the season

GRAHAMSVILLE -- The S.S. Seward Lady Spartans, along with their league leading scorer Alexa Roach, popping the nets for 30 points proved Friday night in Grahamsville, showed why they are the No. 1 seed in OCIAA Division V girls basketball. The visitors handed the Tri-Valley Bears a 50-point loss, 71-21, in the final league game for both teams.

The win for Seward gives them a 17-2 overall record and a perfect 4-0 league record.

The loss gives the Bears an overall record of 11-7 and a 2-2 league record.

Both teams will enter sectional play the first week in March.

Tri-Valley Coach Gary Ter Bush firmly stated, “This is our worst performance of the year, from the start of tip-off we had nothing and we didn't want to play defense.”

“They (S.S. Seward) are a good team but we are so much better then we showed tonight,” Ter Bush added.

From the opening tip-off it was all S.S. Seward as the Spartans rolled to a quick 6-0 lead in the first quarter with Tri-Valley scoring their first two points as the clock reached the 4:55 mark and the only other two-pointer the Bears scored was at the 2:15 mark as Seward took a commanding 22-4 first quarter lead.

Strong S.S. Seward defense combined with a potent offense outscored Tri-Valley 20-7 in the second quarter to lead 42-11 at halftime.

The Bears struggles continued in the third quarter scoring only six points and again in the final eight minutes of play putting the ball into the net twice for a total of 4 points.

Outstanding S.S. Seward senior guard Alexa Roach entered this game having already scored 448 points this season and she showed why she was recruited to start her freshman college year in the Anderson Arena at Division III Misericordia University near Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

Being heavily guarded throughout the game, Roach showed her athletic skills by pounding the nets for 30 points even with limited play in the fourth quarter. Her scoring came with two treys, nine two pointers and six foul shots.

Backing Roach up with scoring was junior guard Josely Medina with 21 points off six three pointers, one deuce and one foul shot.

Junior guard Madison Botsford had five points for Tri-Valley off a trey and a deuce.

S. S. Seward coach Joe DiMattina played the game with only seven players due to several recent injuries.

His comments in post game remarks were, “We had really good defense and our offense was on fire today and this will get us a home game in our first sectional contest.”
