JEFFERSONVILLE — The Sullivan West Lady Bulldogs clashed with the Spackenkill Lady Spartans in a sectional matchup on Monday, May 20.

The Lady Spartans hit the ball hard all game and made it tough on the Lady Bulldogs’ defense who made 10 errors.

Spackenkill scored in all but the third and fourth innings to down Sullivan West, 17-5, as the Lady Bulldogs finish the season with an 11-8 record.

“Boy, did they hit the ball,” said Sullivan West coach Anthony Durkin. “We kind of knew that coming in, but we were hoping to be a little closer towards the end and have a shot, but they hit the ball hard. Some of the plays that we didn’t make, were because they were hit so hard.”

Mary Chellis started the game on the mound for Sullivan West and helped herself the best she could at the plate as she went 3-for-3 with one RBI.

After getting down early and allowing five runs in the top half of the first inning, the Lady Bulldogs kept fighting. Despite the score, they grinded out at-bats and pounced for three runs in the home half of the first to stay right in the game.

Leadoff hitter Sam Hellerer went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored and Elizabeth Reeves went 2-for-3 with one run scored. Three other hitters in the lineup recorded a hit apiece - Karlee Diehl went 1-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk, Kaitlyn Drobysh went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Mckala Chevalier went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

After the three runs in the first inning, Sullivan West scored a run in each of the second and fourth innings.

“It was a great season, the last two seasons were,” Durkin said. “This group has really come along and they’re a fun group to coach. They play as a team and they pick each other up. We haven’t been out of many games.”
