It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts we announce the passing of Laurie Lee (Brochu) Thelman on Saturday, May 27, 2023 at the age of 65. She was at her home in Bethel, surrounded by her family.

The daughter of the late James P. Brochu and Barbara Wells Brochu, she was born July 17, 1957, at Hamilton Ave. Hospital, Monticello, NY.

Laurie graduated from Monticello High School in 1975 while working for the New York telephone company. In 1979, friends became life companions, and Laurie and Bill married on December 23, 1983.  In 1986, after the birth of their first child, she left NYNEX to stay at home and raise her children. Laurie, a true hippie at heart, started volunteering with Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in 2006 where she was hired and worked until 2020. Laurie loved spending time with her family and her beloved golden retrievers. Laurie’s passion for skiing started in High School where she was on the Monticello Alpine Ski team and has passed her passion for skiing to her daughters. She also enjoyed bowling, gardening, music, and time in the kitchen cooking and baking, most famously known for her creme puffs, rice krispies treats, and cinnamon buns.

Laurie was a loving wife, mother, and friend. She is survived by her husband: William (Bill) H. Thelman III; three daughters: Katie and her husband Andrew Skinner of Jeffersonville, Kellee of Bethel, and Kassie and her companion Mike Pomes of Monticello; a brother: James Brochu of Arizona; and sister: Cindi Brasington and her husband Ralph of Florida; a sister-in-law: Cindy Shook and her husband Gary of Florida; a special uncle: Gordon Wells and his wife Linda of Hawley, PA.; an aunt: Palma (Brochu) Avery; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Laurie is predeceased by her parents: James P. Brochu and Barbara Wells Brochu; and in-laws: William H. Thelman Jr. and wife Grace; and a son: Henry William.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Friday, June 2 from 4:00 to 7:00pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello. Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 3 at 11am at the funeral home.  Burial will follow at the Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.
