LIBERTY – Sullivan County District 6 Legislator Luis Alvarez was notified by National Association of Counties (NACo) President James Gore earlier this month that he has been appointed to its Health Steering Committee.
Alvarez had previously served on the national advocacy organization’s Immigration Reform Task Force, Programs and Services Standing Committee, Rural Action Caucus and Veterans and Military Services Committee. He has served on these various NACo committees since 2017, when he was Chair of the Legislature.
In his appointment letter to Alvarez, Gore noted that a major reason Congress and federal agencies look to NACo for feedback on legislative policy decisions is the expertise and engagement of steering committee members such as the county Legislator.
Alvarez, a retired Sheriff’s deputy, also sits on the board of the NYS Association of Counties (NYSAC).
“I strongly believe in NACo’s mission and am proud to represent Sullivan County at the national level,” Alvarez stated. “I remain committed to my neighbors as their legislator, but it’s important to recognize that we’re part of a larger system of government that constantly needs review and improvement.”
NACo was founded in 1935 and serves about 40,000 county elected officials and 3.6 million county employees. The organization advocates county priorities in federal policymaking, promotes exemplary county policies and practices, nurtures leadership skills, expands knowledge networks, optimizes county and taxpayer resources and enriches the public’s understanding of county government.
