Leonora J. Sherman, wife of Israel, mother of David, Adam, and Matthew, passed away on May 29, 2023. Daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, teacher, traveler. Born April 25, 1927 in the Bronx, spent her teen years in Miami, Florida, raised her family in Queens, and spent her retirement in what she often described as extended day camp in a beachside condo.

Mom’s accomplishments are many. Legal secretary, medical secretary, before returning to school to earn two Masters degrees from Queens College, and a Phi Beta Kappa key. Mom was past president of the United Jewish Congress and took great pride in the State of Israel and her faith in Judaism.

Mom taught reading for New York City for twenty years in Junior High School in Masbeth, Queens. Her no nonsense attitude and love fostered many of her students. In Florida, after her retirement, she ran a book club in the local library, exploring literature and running discussion groups.

A great dancer, that’s how she met our dad, at a USO dance, during WWII, fantastic cook, and loved hosting family and friends at our home for celebrations and parties.

Our mother was a walking juke box from the bands of the thirties and forties, and would sing along with the classics of the era. A smile and joy.

Mom’s appreciation of art, music and dance resulted in many visits to museums and Broadway shows. One of my earliest memories is of the Museum of Modern Art, where my brother Adam took classes, and we roamed the galleries, and enjoyed coconut custard pie in the sculpture garden. As a family, she taught us if we look for beauty, we would find it, and to strive to succeed in our careers and endeavors.

Her light, love, and guidance will be missed. May her memory be blessed.
