Hello everyone: It’s Fran DeFilippi Kurpil on this beautiful morning in July 2022.  Every day when I find time to sit in the shade of our patio, I am fascinated by the activity of the birds in our yard.  This hot weather brings them to the water of the bird-bath...one after the other they come to splash, sing and, I guess, spread the good word.

Liberty seeing robust interest in new businesses: That is the headline of the Business Edge, published by the S.C. Democrat. Supervisor, Frank Demayo filled me in on some of the progress.  Special thanks to John Liddle for providing updates here.

Greater Liberty Chamber of Commerce: I just learned that Kyle Goldstein is the new President of the Chamber and it is a sure bet that he will get activity going...I hope some grand opening celebrations.

Lapolt Park: Driving past yesterday, I say “What a blessing.” Such a beautiful, peaceful park with the stream bubbling in the shade of the trees and gardens bright with flowers.

Bridge and Tunnel Tap House: Richard Castagna has been finishing great carpentry work at his business on the corner of Lake and State Streets and is about ready to open. What a great gathering place it will be.

A new Jamaican Restaurant is opening in McCabe’s Restaurant on South Main. DeMayo is very enthusiastic about the different ethnic food places in our down-town.  I’m saying yum, yum to fried plantains, jerk chicken with distinctive spicy taste and maybe coconut rice. McCabe’s is just down the hill from the great New Munson Diner that recently added an outdoor dining area.

Liberty Theater is looking beautiful again and now framing-up work is being completed on the interior spaces next to the box office and the pop-corn popper is ready...ha, that’s my own “Let’s Go!”

Model Train Group: Remember this great venture at 11 Maple Street. This group is dedicated to preserving the history of trains in Sullivan County and will be announcing an opening schedule. It is amazing to see the model trains so beautifully presented.

Second Liberty Unity Festival will be held Saturday, August 6 from 11 am to 3 pm at Walnut Mountain. There will be great music and kids playing soccer with the Liberty Police. It was a nice success last year and I’m sure the kids will have a great time again.

Brian McPhillips just filled me in on the finale of the 2022 season for the Cal Rypken Baseball and Softball League. He said it has been tough for kids during the past two years with COVID, so it was great to get over 140 kids from ages 4 to 12 participating in twelve different teams from Livingston Manor, Roscoe & Sullivan West, and he appreciated the community volunteer involvement.

Prayers for our country and our dear volunteer young men and women in the Armed Services. Every Sunday at Mass, these names are read.  One is my grandson, Major Andrew Gieger and another my cousin, Thomas M. Mungeer, two dedicated young men.

Enjoy summer. The walking trails are great, Hanofee Park swimming and picnicking, and our great restaurants say “Liberty, a great place to be.”

Till next time.
