Hello, my devoted readers. It’s Fran DeFilippi Kurpil.....I guess we are all looking forward to Spring, and today is nearing fifty degrees. I know these warmer temps are only brief and doing a bit of melting. Just standing on my back porch for a minute or so, I enjoy some deep breaths of the fresh, invigorating Liberty air that I was raised on. Like Dolly says, “I was raised on country sunshine”.

Healthiest Fire Department: We are always so thankful for our volunteer fire fighters and in a little chat with John Liddle he told me that Liberty CSD Superintendent Dr. Patrick Sullivan has made the school weight room available on weekends for free physical training for our firemen.  Thanks a million, Dr. Sullivan and may the good Lord be with our life and property savers. Thank you, John, for giving me this information.

Supervisor Frank DeMayo.  I’m sure I’ve praised Frank before because I’m so aware of his ability to get things done.  I asked him for some updates and he gave me a short run-down. A new volunteer group called LibertyNYRising has started monthly meetings and brainstorming for activities and volunteer activities like alive used to do.  Now they are working with the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce on organizing the Fourth of July celebration which DeMayo adds, “We are hoping it is the best ever.”  Plans are to fill the Main and side streets with vendors, entertainment on the main street stage all day, a car show, a beer tent with local breweries, a PARADE down Main Street at noon and the day will culminate with a glorious fireworks display.  I will know more about other great events that our Main Street store owners will be doing.

Liberty Chamber of Commerce: Jack Bodolosky, the new president, has some good progressive ideas to move the Chamber forward. This is good news and we wish him the best.

Parks & Recreation with James Guara, is engaging the local Spanish-speaking community and putting together a Cinco de Mayo celebration. Sounds like a great Summer.

Liberty Creek-side Park: Sullivan 180 awarded the $50,000 Silver Feather 2022 to the town for improvements to the Creek Side Park by collapsing and removing the damaged culvert by School Street, daylight the stream, stabilize the bank and make landscape improvements to the area. This is part of the bigger plan to daylight the stream in key locations to mitigate potential flooding and enhance the pedestrian/parking experience along the Creek Side corridor.

Parksville priorities continues to realize success in their endeavors and has secured a  $800,000 grant from Empire State Development from the Restore New York program  which will go to upgrade 3 key buildings on Main Street, including the corner pharmacy  building. Parksville Priorities is also planning at least three festivals this year....the 2nd annual B’Kwak festival, a Dumpling festival and the 3rd annual Halloween parade and festival.

Also: Sullivan Renaissance/Sullivan 180, along with Assembly woman Aileen Gunther’s office awarded $400,000 Golden Feather money to the town for improvements to the O&W Rail.

Trail segment of Fox Mountain Road Trail Head in Parksville to the Livingston Manor connection.
