LIBERTY - In an effort to improve the health of Sullivan County residents, Sullivan 180 has been encouraging residents to change their lifestyles in many areas. “The Fun Group at Sullivan 180”, a bi-lingual children’s group, has been doing just that.

Improving literacy is one of the areas for healthy change. Under the direction of adult coordinator, Denise Patti, and youth coordinator, Jair Molina-Gavilan, The Fun Group has spent many hours utilizing the Liberty Library’s facilities, supported by Library Director Marjorie Linko.

Books, videos, summer reading contests and most recently “Miss Laura” Liddle’s program “Tales with Tails” has encouraged group members to increase their reading vocabulary, transported them to other worlds in their imaginations, and enhanced their creativity while meeting other kids their age.

In an effort to “give back” to the community while encouraging literacy among other Hispanic-Americans, the Fun Group recently put on a bi-lingual program of songs and movement activities. Both American and Hispanic children moved their “Itsy Bitsy Spider” rings over various body parts and continued to learn each other’s vocabulary with lively songs using bean bags.

The local libraries in Sullivan County have a wealth of free on-site as well as virtual programs for children and adults alike. If your child is bored, support his learning by logging on to your library’s facebook or website or bring him to one of the many fun programs. Many offer crafts which can be brought home. But before having an on-site visit, check facemask expectations.
