Liberty man killed in car accident

KOHLERTOWN — The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate a fatal car accident that occurred earlier this month and left one person dead.

On Friday, July 16 around 7:40 p.m., the Jeffersonville Volunteer First Aid Corps, along with the Jeffersonville Fire Department and Sullivan County Sheriff’s Deputies, responded to an area off State Route 52 in Kohlertown for reports of a vehicle rollover with possible entrapment.

Sullivan County Undersheriff Eric Chaboty said that Liberty resident Charles Kreger, 68, was driving a 2014 Kia Sportage eastbound on State Route 52 just past Sickmiller Road when he failed to negotiate the curve. Kreger crossed through the westbound lane and went off the road, striking a ditch and a culvert which then caused his vehicle to overturn.

When Sheriff’s Deputies arrived on the scene they encountered an EMT from Jeffersonville Volunteer First Aid who had crawled into the vehicle checking for signs of life. Sullivan County Coroner Michael J. Speer also responded and Kreger was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Chaboty, it was Kreger’s birthday and speed was a contributing factor to the accident. Chaboty said they are waiting for medical examiners to determine if Kreger suffered some kind of medical episode while behind the wheel.
