Liberty resident celebrates 103rd birthday

Posted

Joined by loved ones by her side both in person and over the phone at the Care Center at Sunset Lake in Liberty on Tuesday birthday celebrant Marie Stenson enjoyed a sweet treat and festive decorations for her special day as she turned 103 years young.

Stenson spent her time enjoying a parfait treat while conversing with her two children, Caroline Kurtz and Albert Stenson Jr., as well as speaking to her second daughter Alice Littler and grandson Mark Stenson over the phone.

Stenson was born on January 18, 1919 in the Bushwick Section of Brooklyn, New York. After graduating from high school in 1936, Stenson began working as a file clerk for the life insurance company Equitable until 1942.

After finishing that job, she worked for the Sperry Corporation testing gun and weapon sights until 1945, after which she worked for Texaco Gas Company.

On top of working to help provide for her family, Stenson gave back to her community through volunteer work with the Boy’s Cub Scouts and the Girl Scouts, assisted with Church activities and newsletters, and was involved with the local Parent Teacher Association.

In January of 1946, Marie married Albert Stenson, and had their first child in 1948. For 56 years of marriage they lived in New York City and Albert and Marie remained strong in their love.

This connection sprung forth a long line of families and friends who hold Stenson close in their hearts, including three grandchildren, Mark Stenson, Caryn Littler, and Kristin Stenson.

In 1989, the Stensons then moved southward down to Kissimmee, Florida.

A decade after the passing of her husband Albert in 2002, Marie moved back up to her home state of New York to the town of Liberty in 2012.

Stenson continues to enjoy her free time at the Care Center with sewing and needlework, working jigsaw puzzles, and practicing her skills on the piano.
