September is right around the corner, and with that comes the start of school and Library Card Sign-Up month! Library Card Sign-Up month began 34 years ago as a national campaign to get every child to obtain a library card and to use that library card. So what can you get with your library card?

First, you get access to not only the physical collection (books, movies, magazines) at your home library (more on ‘home’ library later) – but you have access to the hundreds of thousands of items available at any of the 47 member libraries of the Ramapo Catskill Library System!

And the best part?

You can have those items sent to your library of choice for pick up. This means if Finkelstein Memorial Library (all the way down in Spring Valley), has a book that you would like to read – you can have that book sent to the library you wish to pick the book up from! No driving to Spring Valley required.

Second, you can access a large and growing collection of e-content – books, movies, magazines and more – all available at your fingertips, without having to set foot in the library once you receive your official card.

Just download the OverDrive or Libby app to your favorite device – put in your library card number, and start reading or listening. You can check with your home library to see what other e-content they offer to their patrons. As an example, if you are a Fallsburg Library cardholder, you can also access Kanopy which offers hundreds of movies and documentaries that you can stream every month.

Other libraries may have other offerings specific to their cardholders, so be sure to ask!

Libraries, and your library card, can also empower you. #LibrariesEmpower you to learn new things through free and open access to information.

#LibrariesEmpower you to connect with others and with your community. They aren’t necessarily the quiet buildings of the past anymore – although the pandemic has changed some things for us as well.

You can meet your neighbors in the library, you can connect with others who share similar interests and passions. This year for Library Card Sign-Up month, let the American Library Association and others know how #LibrariesEmpower you, and if you don’t have a card yet – get one!

So how do you get a library card? You just have to visit your ‘home’ library – meaning the library that your residence pays taxes to.

Many libraries in Sullivan County have the same boundaries as their corresponding school districts – but not all, so if you aren’t sure just call to ask. We’d be happy to direct you to your home library!

Most libraries will require a current photo ID and something showing your physical street address – such as an electric bill or lease agreement if you don’t own your residence.

If you live in the Fallsburg Central School District you can come down to the Fallsburg Library located at 12 Railroad Plaza, South Fallsburg, NY – we’re right across the street from Town Hall and the police department.

You can visit our Facebook page, website – www.fallsburglibrary.org – or call 845-436-6067 for our hours of operation. We hope to see you soon.
