Lorence “Larry” W. Schmitz of Hasbrouck passed away on March 28, 2023, in Rockland County. He was 87.

He was the son of the late Carl William Schmitz and Florence Isabel Conklin, born on June 3, 1935, in Harrisburg, PA.

Known to many as Larry, he proudly served our country in the United States Army from 1958-1960. He was a Sergeant at Woodbourne Correctional Facility until his retirement in 1993. Larry was a member of the Woodbourne Fire Department for many years until he was honored with being a lifetime member. He was an avid hunter, enjoyed gardening and mowing the lawn. Once he retired, he had more time to dedicate to his true passion of construction. He was able to build anything. For some time when he was younger, he worked at Channel Master as a machinist. He could often be found reading, doing word searches, watching Jeopardy and Westerns in his spare time. On any given Sunday he would watch NASCAR, but more than anything he loved spending time with his family. He will be deeply missed by everyone that knew and loved him.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of almost 40 years Dorothy “Dottie” Schmitz, his children Robert Schmitz (Suzie), Richard Schmitz, Dawne Schmitz, Joe (Tracy) Bagley, and Peggy (Mike) Koestner, seven grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, his dear friends Freddie (Sue) VanWagner, Les (Tracye) Hyde and Raul (Susie) Pelayes, and many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Memorial contributions in Larry’s name can be made to Woodbourne Fire Co., P.O. Box 45, Woodbourne, NY 12788.

Visitation was Thursday, March 30, 2023, at Colonial Memorial Funeral Home, 396 State Route 52, Woodbourne, NY 12788 from 4-6:00pm. Military honors were held at the funeral home at 4:30pm. A Firematic service was held at 5:30pm followed by a funeral service.
