Losing an opportunity for peace

To the editor:

In a recent issue of the Democrat, a letter writer Rayman Elozus seems concerned for the ‘Justice and self-determination’ for the Palestinian people. Perhaps a clarification might help.

The Muslim world sought Israel’s destruction from the day Israel was established in May of 1948, before it occupied Gaza. Today Israel does not occupy Gaza as it withdrew from Gaza 16 years ago.

The Palestinians rejected a state of their own five times. In 1937, the British Peel Commission offered the Arabs 80% of the geographical area known as Palestine while the Jews were offered 20%. The Arabs rejected it.

In 1947, the Arabs rejected the United Nations partition plan.

In 1967, Egypt, Syria, and Jordan attacked Israel ready to destroy the new country. They did not succeed!

In 1993, the Oslo Accord brought the PLO and Israel together to reach a peace agreement.

The Jews lived in the area for 3000 years, 1400 years before Muhammad was born.

In 2000, at Camp David, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak offered the Palestinian leader Arafat a state in all of Gaza and 94% of the West Bank with East Jerusalem as its capitol. Arafat rejected the offer and President Clinton said Arafat was there for ‘14 days and said no to everything.’

In 2008, Israeli President Olmert offered additional land; the Palestinians said no again.

There are 22 Arab states in the Middle East and one Jewish state, the size of New Jersey. There is even a state with a Palestinian majority, that would be Jordan.

Today, the Palestinians are controlled by Hamas, which in turn is controlled by Iran, whose purpose is to destroy Israel.

When President Trump organi-zed the Abraham Accords, to which many Arab countries signed on, it left, once again, having the Palestinians losing an opportunity for peace.

Israeli Arab citizens vote for the Knesset (Parliament) and some are in the Knesset, how many Jews vote or in the government of any Arab country. Right, zero.

If the Palestinians/Hamas put down their weapons, there will be peace. If Israel puts down its weapons, there will be no Israel!
