March for reproductive rights comes to Narrowsburg

Posted

NARROWSBURG — Women and men from the area gathered in Narrowsburg on Saturday afternoon for the Women’s March of Sullivan County protesting the recent Texas bill SB8 that limits women’s access to abortions after 6 weeks of pregnancy and authorizes private citizens to bring civil action against any person who obtains or helps a person obtain an abortion after that time.

The event was part of the larger, national Women’s March for Reproductive Rights which included marches across the country including one in Washington D.C.

“It’s unfortunate that religion has gotten involved in something that should be between a woman, her doctor and her partner,” said attendee Joan Russo of Hawley, PA. “When you’re sick you don’t go to your Congressman, you go to your physician.”

Attendees of all ages met at the Narrowsburg-Darbytown Bridge with signs to raise awareness of the march, before marching down Main Street in Narrowsburg stopping at the deck in town to hear from speakers including Michele Minor Wolf, the executive director of Victims Intervention Program (VIP) of Wayne County; Barb Schmidt, a volunteer at Planned Parenthood of Greater New York; Kambri Crews, candidate for Cochecton Town Council and author of “Burn Down The Ground: A Memoir”; and Ari Mir-Pontier, the outreach director for Congressman Antonio Delgado.

“We must continue to stand together, fight together and work together for abortion justice,” Minor Wolf said.

She talked about hearing women’s abortion stories in her work at VIP and reminded attendees that many women are shamed for their decision.

“I have listened to stories that still make my heart hurt. This rally is not just about keeping abortion legal, it’s about making it legal, affordable and stigma free,” she said.

“I believe that every woman, whether American born, immigrant, or across the world deserve respect with their choices. Especially with their bodies,” Ari Mir-Pontier said.

BOTH people having sex, if they don't want to be parents, should use BIRTH CONTROL. That way, having abortions won't be needed. BTW, if you want an abortion, pay for it yourself or have the "baby daddy" pay for it, NOT tax payers like me.
