Matt McPhillips running in District 1

BETHEL –– Since the age of four, 27-year-old Matt McPhillips fondly remembers conversations with his father Vince about the news, politics and current events, which always interested him. Now, years later, he is entering the political fray as a candidate, and will challenge Legislative Chairman Rob Doherty in District 1 this November.

McPhillips studied political science and international relations at Syracuse University.

Upon their graduation from college, McPhillips and his wife Vanessa, both Liberty alumni, chose to return to Sullivan County, with the intent of contributing to the betterment of the place they call home. The couple is currently building a home in Bethel.

His parents have a long history in the County. His father, who had worked in NYSEG’s Liberty office for over 40 years, has been a Town of Liberty Councilman since 2016, and his mother was born and raised on a dairy farm in Parksville, and worked for The Gerry Foundation for over 40 years.

McPhillips is a Legislative Aide for NYS Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther, where he helps with constituent issues, legislation, as well as grants and the budget.

He had also previously worked with former U.S. Representative John Faso (NY-19) as a constituent services representative, and had interned with U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s office before that.

“Throughout my time in Sullivan County, whether it was working for the House of Representatives, or through my time with Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther, my focus has always been on helping the people of Sullivan County address issues,” said McPhillips.

He added, “Through my strong community ties, my experience in legislation, and my desire to help move Sullivan County forward, I look forward to continuing to work to make Sullivan County a better place for all to live, work and raise a family.”
