Millbrook, Chapel Field compete for state glory

TROY – For the second year in a row, the Millbrook Blazers are New York State Class C Girls Basketball Champions. Millbrook defended their title against Section VI Randolph on Sunday afternoon.

The Blazers started their playoff run with a Section IX tournament win over Tri-Valley before beating Seward in the Section IX Championship. Their road to the state championship included the winners of Section I, Section XI, Section II and finally Section VI.

Millbrook defeated Tuckahoe 77-34 in the opening round of the state tournament, then Port Jefferson 61-30. After that they took on Greenwich in the State Semis and won 70-52 before defeating Randolph 59-45 to hoist the trophy for the second consecutive year.

Chapel Field, a Class D team from Section IX, also competed for the State Championship on Sunday, but did not share the same fate as Millbrook.

After an undefeated league record and Section IX tournament wins over Mount Academy and Roscoe, Chapel Field entered the state tournament.

The Lions opened with a Subregional victory over Bridgehampton from Section XI, defeating them 58-53. They subsequently defeated Section IV Champion South Kortright 68-58 in the Regional matchup.

Late game heroics propelled Chapel Field past Section II North Warren in the State Semis, but they ran into a brick wall in the State Championship.

Defending Class D Champion Prattsburgh/Avoca breezed through the State Tournament, and continued their dominant run with a 70-48 victory on the biggest stage.

Both Chapel Field and Millbrook played a phenomenal tournament, and will no doubt be looking to get past our local teams next season.
