Abe Rutner
Dear Editor,
I am writing in response to recent letters suggesting a moratorium in Fallsburg, Bethel, and Liberty due to infrastructure concerns. While I acknowledge the problems, I strongly disagree that a moratorium or down zoning is the solution.
In fact, Fallsburg's 2016 moratorium has only worsened the situation. Instead of upgrading infrastructure, the comprehensive plan focused on restricting building in certain areas. Eight years later, we have more problems than ever.
The answer lies in upgrading our infrastructure to handle responsible growth, not halting it. Comparing Sullivan County to neighboring counties with similar land areas but larger populations while Sullivan has a population of about 80,000 . Meanwhile Ulster has a population of over 181,000, Dutchess almost 300,000 and Orange over 400,00 highlights our capacity for growth.
To compare town's , For example Town of bethel has
About 90 sq mi but only have 4,000 population, meanwhile Town of wallkill
has about 60 sq mi and has a
30,486 population and there's no issues with water, sewer etc.
Furthermore, blaming summer residents for our issues is unfair. These homes are designed for year-round use, and owners pay taxes regardless of their presence. If they choose to stay, the can legally do so.
The real solution lies in our town and county officials doing their job to improve infrastructure, just like other towns in neighboring counties. It's time for action, not moratoriums.
Sincerely,
Abe Rutner
