National Fire Prevention Week in Roscoe

ROSCOE –– This week is Fire Prevention Week, starting on October 3 and ending October 9, and Roscoe Central School teamed up with the Roscoe Rockland Fire Department to educate elementary students about fire safety.

Students learned about the PPE and tools that firefighters use to protect the community, and also got a chance to show off their skills with the hoseline.

RRFD firefighters went over various topics, such as “Stop, Drop, and Roll,” having a safe meeting place in the event of an emergency, and what to do if you find unattended matches.

The students demonstrated the “Stop, Drop, and Roll” through a caution tape obstacle course, and spun a wheel to earn candy by answering various fire safety questions.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week, and this year’s theme is “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.” Students learned some of the different sounds that a firefighter might make, including the PASS alarm on their Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and the sound of their tools scraping against the ground during search operations.

As we recognize Fire Prevention Week, take some time to think about an emergency and what you and your family might do if a situation ever arises.
