Division I skiers brave dreary weather at Belleayre Mountain

HIGHMOUNT – Unlike all the other sports in the high school array, alpine skiing does not have a guaranteed locale for its races. Whereas other sports have their given courts, fields and tracks, skiing is dependent on snowfall to proceed. This winter, the white stuff has been at a premium, causing the local meets at Holiday Mountain to be canceled as the venue has not made snow.

That leaves the trips to Belleayre Mountain or Mount Peter as the sole available chances for the slalom and giant slalom races. Skiers who aspire to perform exceptionally well at Sectionals and make it to states have been frustrated by the situation. So it was with belated enthusiasm that the Division I skiers got to ski at Belleayre for the first race there this season.

The weather was far from ideal. With temperatures hovering just above freezing, the morning was beset by rain. Onteora had some icy roads and was on a two-hour delay, which pushed the start time from 10 to 12. Undaunted, the skiers took off on the giant slalom runs. Leaders for the day included Tri-Valley’s Austin Hartman, Monticello’s Samuel Rein, Monticello’s Alexis Heins and Harly Taylor as well as Sullivan West’s Lucia Kennedy.

The next trip to Belleayre is on February 1. Results for the day’s races are as follows:
