New historic marker ceremony to be held June 12

BARRYVILLE — Town of Highland co-Historian Debra Conway is proud to announce that a new historic marker commemorating the first suspension bridge over the Upper Delaware River will be unveiled on River Road in Barryville at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 12. The ceremony is scheduled to take place on the birthday of John A. Roebling, the man who became famous for designing the Brooklyn Bridge. Roebling is said to have provided plans for the bridge that linked Barryville with Shohola, PA. beginning in 1855. It was built by Chauncey Thomas of Shohola. The bridge was originally a single span nearly 500 feet in length. After years marked by repeated failures, it was finally completely destroyed in 1866 and had to be rebuilt with a center pier added. The new bridge lasted until 1941. The historic marker was procured by the non-profit history education group, The Delaware Company, of which Debra Conway is Executive Director. Funding was provided by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation. The town of Highland Highway Department installed the marker. The ceremony will take place at the bridge abutment across from 48 River Road in Barryville. The public is invited.
