As I told my granddaughter, Shauna, when she wanted to know why I was eating my dinner at eight o'clock at night, which was really the REST of my dinner, “I eat when I'm hungry and sleep when I'm tired.”

I knew I'd be writing that phrase for my column so I decided to ask Siri who had first come up with that. Her answer floored me. “Put your iphone down right away and take a nap. I'll wait here.”

I have been catching up on paperwork, but not as much as I should. I've been reading old diaries. Not ones written by famous people like Anne Frank, but my own from when I was a teenager. As I told Shauna, I was definitely boy crazy back then and she was both surprised and amused. Guess it's hard for her to imagine her grandma in such a state.

One thing I've been doing, which I thought would give me pleasure, is playing the piano. It's been over a year since I've done that so I knew even playing one easy song without mistakes wouldn't happen right away. The music is almost as old as I am and in even worse shape. Many of the notes are illegible and many of the rest I've forgotten. I've sworn to practice every day until I can get a little better. Time will tell how long that will last.

I've been watching too much TV and have even been watching some of the commercials, most of which annoy me. The ones about how convenient it is to gamble from home are the ones that really get to me. When he says when he won, he told his mother, his brother, and even the dog, I wonder if he also would have admited when he lost that he might have gambled away the rent or mortgage money or what could have gone to a worthy charity.

So “I eat when I'm hungry, I sleep when I'm tired, BUT I have to be careful in a rut not to become mired.”
