110 Years Ago - 1912

Walter Bury, assistant cashier of the First National Bank of Roscoe, was united in marriage Tuesday to Miss Margaret Muesgeier, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Godrey Muesgeier, also of Roscoe.

A petition is being circulated along the highway between Honesdale and Narrowsburg for a state road.

Rev. John E. Straub, pastor of St. Paul's Reformed Church at Callicoon Center, has been engaged to preach also at the German churches at North Branch and Hortonville.

Matt Bayer, while out hunting for honey last Tuesday, ran across a large tree near Nick Marti's and located over 50 pounds of fine honey. — Local Corresp.

John Reyman of East Hill near Jeffersonville went to the city on Friday of last week where he will again be employed on the new Grand Central Depot which is now under construction.

A meeting was held Saturday evening in the W.H. Dunn store in Beach Lake, Pa., to consider organizing a fire company at that place. Beach Lake has had two bad fires of late which has spurred the citizens of that thriving village to provide better means for the protection of their respective properties.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Canfield of Galilee, Pa., a daughter on August 28.

The large boarding house of Hudson King of Forestburgh was totally destroyed by fire Wednesday afternoon. The building and contents were insured for $2,500. Mr. King has had the property insured for thirty years and this is his first loss.

100 Years Ago - 1922

Elmer C. Knack & Co. of Callicoon Center have secured the contract for the erection of three new school buildings in the consolidated White Sulphur Springs District and work has already begun. The contract is for $21,997 for the three buildings with work to be completed in 175 days.

Sunday, the cornerstone of the new Methodist Church at White Sulphur Springs was laid.

Walter Beesmer, while working in a stone quarry Saturday morning killed a five-foot rattlesnake that wore 12 rattles. Naturalists say it is unusual to find this reptile out so late in the year. — Equinunk Corresp.

Mr. and Mrs. Leary Monington of Hillside, Pa., are rejoicing over the birth of a baby girl, Eloise Lavon, born September 25.

Theron A. Olver is reported to be the successor of John E. Dennis as superintendent of the Borden plant at this place. Mr. and Mrs. Dennis expect to depart about October 2 for Blackshear, Ga.

Miss Ruth Brigham and Russell S. Martin, both of Honesdale, were married in Monticello September 16. She is the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil O. Brigham of Rural City.

90 Years Ago - 1932

Progress is being made by George C. Neally of Cochecton to have his airplane field recognized as a standard landing place for airplanes. He hopes to have his field in A-1 shape when the inspector makes his next visit.

Under the relief law passed by the last Congress, Liberty is among those places to get a new post office building to cost $100,000 or more. It is hoped that construction can be started before winter.

An overheated kitchen stove was held responsible for a blaze which destroyed the Waldheim, a boarding hotel, a mile from White Lake Sunday night.

Three thousand spectators at the first annual Sullivan County Air Show at Wurtsboro received an unexpected thrill Saturday when a plane, piloted by Fred Kush of Port Jervis with Warren Keeler of Wurtsboro as a passenger, caught in a tree and nose-dived into a swamp adjoining the airport Saturday afternoon. Both men were uninjured although the plane was ruined.

Senator and Mrs. Thomas C. Desmond will have a buffet luncheon at their home in Balmville, near Newburgh, on October 8 for the members of the Orange and Sullivan County Republican Committees.

80 Years Ago - 1942

Sullivan County's first appointed county judge, William A. Thompson, will be honored October 5 when the Sullivan County Bar Association, in cooperation with the Sullivan County Historical Society and the Town of Thompson, will conduct ceremonies at Thompsonville and dedicate an historical marker which has been erected on the judge's grave. He was appointed Judge of the Court of Common Pleas on June 1, 1809, a little more than two months after Sullivan County was formed from a part of Ulster.

Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Meckle of Lava are the parents of a baby girl, born September 18; Mr. and Mrs. William Fischer of Cochecton are the parents of a baby boy, born September 21; Mr. and Mrs. Louis Liebman of Long Eddy are the parents of a baby girl, born September 28; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Vogt of Shohola, Pa., are the parents of a baby girl born September 24, all at the Callicoon Hospital.

Beryl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Brigham, and Abe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Keesler, all of the Abrahamsville section, were married Monday, September 21, at the Canastota Methodist Parsonage by Rev. Charles Hess.

Alice Jean, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Tegeler of Damascus, Pa., became the bride of Lt. T. F. Jenkins of Clarks Green, Pa., on September 13, in Trenton, N.J.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hadley of Bovina Center, a daughter, September 14, at the Delhi Hospital. The mother is the former Doris Deck of Long Eddy.

The Kenoza Lake school, which is a part of the central district, was closed this week, since all the students from that area are now attending the central school. The teacher, Fred A. Hust, is now teaching in the central school. He needs only about six more months to be able to retire.

Sidney Elroy Ellison, 26, a gunner's mate, serving somewhere in the Pacific with the Pacific Fleet, was reported killed in action. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Allison of Liberty and is the 60th fatality of  World War II from Sullivan County.

Damaging frost was reported in Rock Valley on Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Friends have received work that PFC Fred Cape of the US Marine Corps has arrived safely at his destination overseas. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Cape of Youngsville. . . Ship Fitter 3rd Class Herman Buddenhagen has informed his family that he had been stationed at Samoa but had left there. His letter was written September 2, postmarked September 10 and received here September 22.

70 Years Ago - 1952

Nancy Arlene, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Long and Gerald William, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Werlau, were christened in a double christening by Rev. John E. Straub on September 21 at the home of the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Weiss.

Miss Fay Weiss, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Weiss, became the bride of Thomas A. Mahoney at a ceremony in St. George's Church, Jeffersonville, on September 20.

W. Eugene Roesch, who only became editor of the Sullivan County Record in Jeffersonville on September 1, and moved to town September 9, died at the home of Mrs. Elliott Moran, where he had a room, last Thursday.

At the Callicoon Hospital, it was a daughter Monday to Mr. and Mrs. Leo Rosenberger of Hortonville; a son, Tuesday, to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Roemer of Hortonville; a son to Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Korth of Callicoon Center on Tuesday; and a son, Wednesday to Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Tighe of Milanville, Pa.

A triple christening took place at the Oscar Schaefer home last Sunday when their two children, Robert George and Karen Sandra, and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Orr, Arleen Kathleen, were baptized. Rev. John E. Straub officiated. A picnic was held following the ceremonies.

A note from Betty and Edwin Weiss of Long Island City states that their son, Ensign Gary Weiss, a flyer with the Navy, is on NATO maneuvers off the coast of Norway.

Sullivan County has the largest concentration of resort hotels in a single area in the world. There are 534 such hostelries having a total of 34,000 rooms and the number of visitors during the 1952 season has been estimated at above one million.

60 Years Ago - 1962

Two Callicoon citizens were honored at individual 90th birthday parties — Mrs. Barbara Dreher of the Beechwoods observed her 90th birthday on September 19 with neighbors and relatives helping her enjoy the day. Mrs. Christina Wizeman had her birthday September 24. She was honored with a party on  Saturday evening and again on Monday evening.

The new two-year Sullivan County Community College should open a year from now according to Dr. Paul Orvis, Dean of the State  University's Community College, at a special meeting of the Board of Supervisors held Tuesday afternoon.

Twin girls were born Wednesday to Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Tuttle of North Branch, at the Callicoon Hospital.

On Sunday afternoon, September 16, the Rock Valley Ladies Aid tendered a farewell party to Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Anderson of Fernwood. The Andersons left Sunday for their new home in Littleton, N.H.

Mr. and Mrs. Albert Ballard (Rosa Mary Bennett, formerly of Cochecton) became parents of a daughter, Vicki Esther, Monday at Loomis Hospital in Liberty.

Fred Henry of Callicoon Center won $100 in the Victory drawing in Jeffersonville last week.

From the state of California comes the happy news that a daughter, Sheryl Ann, arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Domfort on September 8. Former residents of Jeffersonville, Mrs. Domfort is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nat Bodenstein.

50 Years Ago - 1972

Miss Ronni Bills of Livingston Manor was selected to reign as Miss Sullivan County Sportsmen's Show.

Engagements in the news. . . Mr. and Mrs. Walter Roemer of Hortonville announce the engagement of their daughter, Peggy, to Jeffrey Sattler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Sattler of Hortonville. . . Mrs. Norma Hunter announces the engagement of her daughter, Joyce Cecele, to Steven J. Hillriegel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Hillriegel of Callicoon.

The bomb scare in Honesdale, Pa.,  Thursday morning resulted in the evacuation of four buildings in the 600 block on the west side of Main St. The incident occurred about 11 a.m. No bomb was found by police and the all-clear was given at 12:30 p.m.

Personal greetings from Governor Rockefeller, Lt. Governor Malcolm Wilson and state and county officials, were among the many letters and cards received by Mrs. Christina Wizemann of Callicoon who celebrated her 100th birthday on September 24. Mrs. Wizemann has spent almost her entire life in Callicoon.

Two Jeffersonville school students, Stephen Clifford and Jose Rivera, were given testimonial letters and $25 savings bonds from the First National Bank of Jeffersonville for their help in apprehending the alleged bank robber who held up the bank recently. The boys were at the gas station across from the bank at the time of the robbery. They gave chase and were able to give complete descriptions of the truck used in the get-away.

Linda Rapenske and Juanita Chandler have been declared top salesladies in a summer sale of household cleaner, conducted by the Liberty High School cheerleaders. The $270 raised will be used to purchase new football sweaters.

Marguerite Planz of Abrahamsville became the bride of Frank J. Rustic Jr. of Liberty on September 6, at a ceremony held at the Holy Cross Church in Callicoon. . . Linda Jean Myers of Jeffersonville became the bride of Timothy Baker of Youngsville at a ceremony in the Methodist Church in Jeffersonville on September 16.

It is estimated that over 3,000 sportsmen and their families gathered Saturday at the Livingston Manor Airport and enjoyed the first annual hunting and fishing day.

40 Years Ago - 1982

Sylvia Peters of Callicoon was one of two students recently awarded $500 Delhi College Alumni Association Scholarships for their second year of study at the State University Agricultural and Technical College at Delhi. She is a veterinary science technology major in the Division of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Delhi.

The Lions Club of  Liberty recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. Assisting in the cake cutting were Dave Panebaker, Lions Club President Leonard Steinberg and Elwood Green.

Dick  Coombe, Sullivan County treasurer, was victorious in his bid in the recent September 23 Republican primary for a spot on the November ballot when he will run for Assemblyman from the new 98th Assembly District.

Joan Elmore of Sunny Terrace Kennels, Damascus, Pa., is the owner of the new trial champion basset hound, Sunny Terrace Amy. Amy completed her field trial by coming in second at the Pilgrim Basset Hound Show in Richmond, Mass., on  September 12.

Mary Jean Sneed and Donald Olson were married on July 17 at the First United Methodist Church in Pontotoc, Miss. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Olson of Galilee, Pa. . . Susan DeVito and Leonard R. Chieco were married at Holy Cross Church by Father Anthony Moore on June 26. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Salvatore DeVito of Rock Valley. . . Mary Ellen Kelly, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph A. Kelly Sr. of RD #1, Honesdale, Pa., and William Douglas were married at St. Cecilia's Church, Hilltop, White's Valley, Pa., on July 17.

30 Years Ago - 1992

Lillian Kreutler, a resident at the Roscoe Community Nursing Home, was joined by three generations of her family when she celebrated her 100th birthday on September 21 at the home. Born in Newark, she moved to Shandelee in the 1920s where she and her late husband, Edward, ran The Two Vets ice cream parlor there.

Barbara and Eddie P. Moran of Jeffersonville, owners of Stone Wall Farms and the new Purina feed and horse supply dealers in Sullivan County, were joined by Robert Sykes of Hortonville, Evelyn Weissmann of Callicoon Center and Purina Northeast District Manager Bob Kieselowsky on a trip to the Purina Mills Research Farm in Missouri earlier this summer.

Denise Schalck, daughter of Ron and Carol Schalck of Narrowsburg, became the bride of Steven Immoor, son of Doug and Linda Immoor of Youngsville, on August 1 at the Narrowsburg United Methodist Church. Rev. Richard Hewitt officiated.

The Liberty Central School Class of 1952 held their 40th reunion, the first get-together since their graduation, at the Days Inn in Liberty on July 18.

More than 50 cars participated in the second annual Loch Sheldrake Firemen and Ladies Auxiliary car show last Sunday. There was also a flea market.

Malcolm Ross Jr. of the National Park Service recently spoke to the Monticello Rotary Club about the future of the Delaware River, its water quality and how the surrounding environment can best be maintained through educating the public.

20 years ago - 2002

Harold “Iggy” Kronenberg will be retiring as Sullivan County Fire Coordinator on October 18. He has held the position for 25 years. Deputy Fire Coordinator Dick Martinkovic has been recommended by the Fire Advisory Board as his succesor.

Tri-Valley Superintendent of Schools George Vanderzell is retiring in 2004. The announcement of his intention was made early in order to allow the board to hire a successor for his position with enough time to become familiar with the district and the community.

A girl, Lily Anna Ogozalek, was born September 9, 2002 to Kristin Barron and John Ogozalek of French Woods. She joins a brother, Sam, at home.

A boy, Mason Cole, was born September 25, 2002 to Evan and Heidi Reimer of Cochecton. He has two brothers, Alex and Kyle, at home.

Megan Baxter, a 17-year-old Liberty High School senior and a Girl Scout from Troop 136 of the Sarah Wells Girl Scout Council, hosted a butterfly garden dedication ceremony on Saturday at the school in Liberty as part of her Gold Award project. In association with fellow Gold Award hopeful, Erin Simpson, Baxter planted this flower garden and “peace pole” next to the school’s flagpole. Simpson is putting together a video and booklet about the project, which should be in full bloom next summer.

10 years ago - 2012

Once again, the Halls Mills Covered Bridge in Claryville narrowly escaped destruction. The September 18-19 rains which inundated Livingston Manor also hit Claryville, swelling the Neversink River higher than even last year’s Hurricane Irene-induced flooding. “It was worse than Irene,” affirmed Neversink Town Supervisor Mark McCarthy, noting a Grahamsville rain gauge logged an incredible nine inches of rainfall. Hunter and Blue Hill roads in the vicinity of Halls Mills were the hardest-hit. The current Hunter Road bridge saw the Neversink sweep over its deck, while just downstream, the 100-year-old covered bridge lost even more of the pier that was washed away during last year’s epic storm.

At the Roscoe O&W Railway Museum dinner at the Rockland House last month, Wilmer and Ethel Sipple of Roscoe were given an award by the Ontario & Western Railway Historical Society, Inc. of Middletown, presented by Joe Myers. It is a special recognition award for their tireless work in preserving the history of the New York Ontario & Western Railway and in the establishment and continued operation of the Roscoe NYO&W Museum.
