October a busy month for tourism

Welcome to our monthly column from the Sullivan Catskills Visitors Association (SCVA). In this space we will talk about what the Association has been doing and where we are headed in the future. It has been a busy time at the SCVA, but before we get into that you may be wondering, what is the SCVA?

Maybe you’ve heard about the organization or are confused on what exactly it is. The Sullivan Catskills Visitors Association’s purpose is to promote and support the Sullivan County Catskills’ natural, cultural, and recreational assets to optimize tourism revenue.

It also aspires to make the Sullivan Catskills a premier multi-seasonal travel destination in New York State. Or put simply, we are here to assist in promoting the Sullivan Catskills and all the wonderful things it has to offer, while actively pursuing an increase in visitation and visitor spending.

With that being said, we just came out of a busy October. Now that meeting in person is allowable, we have been strategically moving back into trade and consumer shows.

Our staff recently traveled to New York City for the International Travel Show at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. SCVA shared a presence at Destination East in Albany, a meeting planner forum, and the Springfield Travel Show.

Staff members also traveled to Niagara Falls for the Bus Association of New York conference promoting group travel, and to Washington DC where New York State tourism offices joined together to promote our regions to meeting planners.

These shows allow us to put the Sullivan Catskills in front of a large audience, garnering excitement for the county as a travel destination, while networking and partnering with other organizations, media, consumers, and travel trade professionals.

The SCVA participated in a program through New York State to offer sessions to educate our properties and attractions on how to work with the international market.

These sessions are taking place over three months and are presented by the SCVA and our partner, ALON Marketing Group, to members who wished to sign up. There is time to sign up for the third session by contacting the SCVA office.

We’re always working to provide our members and hospitality partners with the best benefits that will serve their business in a conducive way and help them grow. Together we want to see growth and success in the entire Sullivan Catskills.

And finally, we’d like to end this column with some exciting news. Due to our efforts and partnership with The Valley Table, Sullivan County is joining Hudson Valley Restaurant Week for the first time. This popular, two-week event is held every fall and spring and features more than 100 restaurants.

How does it work? No passes, tickets or coupons are required. Diners simply browse the list of participating restaurants, choose any or all that appeal, and call the restaurant directly to reserve a table. Reservations are highly encouraged.

We’re so excited to be a part of Restaurant Week, so let’s show our Sullivan County restaurants our support! We have 19 participating restaurants; you can find the list, what they’re serving and more on the website, www.valleytable.com/restaurant-week.

Looking ahead, we are busy preparing for the 2023 Travel Guide. This award-winning publication features where to stay, what to do, where to eat and so much more for both visitors and residents alike.

Now is the time to get your business listing in the Guide, please contact us to update your listing or become a member.
