One lane road rules even a toddler can understand

I remember learning the etiquette of driving on a one lane road when my feet still dangled high above the floorboard pedals.

The rules were so simple a toddler could understand them, and as a toddler growing up on a road so rural it both dead ended and could handle just one car at any one point along its width, I had near daily chances to see them at work.

First: Show your respect.

If you were the first to reach the pull-off or even a widening where you could maneuver your car safely off the roadway, it was up to you to do so. Hitting the gas and running right by was not an option, nor was stopping in a narrow strip and expecting someone else to get around you.

Second: Know your vehicle.

Some cars are wider than others. You need to know just how tight a squeeze you can fit yours through and how much space another driver will need to get around you.

Third: Know your environment.

Not all shoulders are created equal. Some will hold your car. Others will swallow it. Beware going too far over onto the latter. Don't force any other driver on one either.

Finally, show your gratitude.

If someone pulled over for you, you waved and you honked. If it was night time, and you worried they might not see the wave, you might even throw in a quick flash of your lights to ensure they were fully thanked.

See? So simple a toddler can get them.
