Peace in the Storm

Only a few short weeks ago we were all living our normal lives. Then we learned about a serious disease shutting down parts of China that was quickly spreading to other countries. Now coronavirus is here, and our lives are being turned upside down.

During times of calamity and the perilous days we live in, many are paralyzed with fear and can easily give in to panic. But we must remember that God is still in control and His peace is readily available to us through His word. So today I would like to share some scriptures that may help to alleviate your fears and give you peace and hope to sustain through this time.

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me” (Psalm 23:4). “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear” (Psalm 46:1-2). “Don't be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand” (Isaiah 41:10 NLT). “For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, do not fear; I will help you” (Isaiah 41:13).

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:1-2). “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9). “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life?” (Luke 12:25).

Instead of fear, God offers us His peace. Jesus said in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Philippians 4:6-7 encourages us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

During difficult times, our hope and trust must be in God alone. “Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the LORD” (Psalm 31:24). “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13).

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take” (Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT). “The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and He helps me” (Psalm 28:7). “The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in Him” (Nahum 1:7). (For further reading, see Psalm 91.)
