LIBERTY – A drive-by parade featuring members of the Village of Liberty Police Department and the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, followed by a birthday party, took place at Achieve Rehab and Nursing Facility in Liberty on Wednesday to celebrate Phyllis Dougherty’s 102nd trip around the sun.

The former valedictorian at S.S. Seward Institute, located in Florida, New York, spent nine years working as her high school principal’s secretary, before spending over two decades working for a law office in Monticello. Around that time, she met her husband Edward, and together, they have a son named Kevin.

According to the nurses at Achieve, Phyllis loves to tell stories about how she grew up speaking Polish, of her family, and how involved she was at her church where she helped take care of the altars.

They also praised her sense of humor.

“She has us in stitches laughing so hard,” said Achieve nurse DJ Schneider.

When Achieve Therapeutic Recreations Director Mary Daniels-Gandy gave Dougherty a “Shirley Temple,” she replied, “It’s just juice,” which drew laughter from those in attendance.

Finally, when asked the secret to living a long and happy life, she said, “Love.”
