Professional Women of Sullivan County Hosts Forum on Domestic Violence

Posted

HURLEYVILLE — At its April meeting, the Professional Women of Sullivan County, a Chapter of New York State Women, Inc., hosted a Forum on Domestic Violence in an effort to share information regarding the County’s efforts to manage the issues surrounding domestic abuse.

The Forum was organized by Sabina Toomey and Pat Hendrickson, Co-Chairs of the PWSC Advocacy Committee. Forum panelists were:  NYS Senator Peter Oberacker, NYS Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther, Sullivan County District Attorney Brian Conaty, Sullivan County Family Court Judge Jacqueline Ricciani, Sullivan County Commissioner of Health and Human Services John Liddle, Fearless CEO Kellyann Kostyal-Larrier and Fearless COO Sorita Green.

The information shared by the panelists provided the PWSC members in attendance with the awareness of existing accountability systems, support services, as well as areas of need.  Questions asked of the panelists covered a wide range of issues, such as the origin of complaints, legal jurisdiction, referrals to Family Court, referrals to Fearless for time-limited safe housing and a myriad of support services and follow-up services by the SC Department of Social Services.

Members of the panel referenced programs that have recently begun, as well as those that are in the process of being developed to meet the many needs that exist. The group of contributors agreed that Domestic Violence and its many related problems and needs is complex and complicated and in need of funding and community involvement.  The victims, adults and children, are severely impacted and often need long-term support.

The Professional Women of Sullivan County plans to expand its advocacy on this topic and others in the future. It hopes to revisit issues related to Domestic Violence in the future to increase awareness of the successes of current programs, as well as those of proposed projects.

Professional Women of Sullivan County would like to thank the Sullivan County Museum for providing the spacious accommodations for this forum. Appreciation is also extended to The Frederick A. Cook Society for graciously providing a welcome buffet at the Casa Mia Restaurant.
