WURTSBORO — There is interest in starting up a flea market between May and October in the Town of Mamakating, according to Supervisor Michael Robbins, who noted the potential organizer’s “very good” skills. The organizer’s name is Emma Dewing.
“She [will be the one who] runs it. It’s no money out of our pocket,” explained Robbins. He also noted this organizer had great success with putting together a flea market in Beacon. The website for this is www.beaconfleamarket.com.
Dewing was also commended by Councilman Peter Goodman to be very particular about which vendors she was to bring in.
“They will be out in the [town hall] parking lot and she brings the porta potties with her and she keeps everyone on schedule,” explained Goodman.
Robbins added that the Town was told they wouldn’t have to open the building at all and the porta potty would leave Sunday. The emphasis would be on vintage and antiques but the market would be open to local, handcraft and secondhand.
Robbins proposed having the woman come to the Town’s next meeting to discuss further and find if the Board is in favor of it.
Talking tree treatment for the Town
Last year, the Town Board of Mamakating had set aside $30,000 to have tree work done. This endeavor was able to remove a number of dead trees and was reported by Robbins to have worked “very well.”
“We actually just finished up in February,” recounted Robbins. “The 12 days ended up working out with the Highway Department and the tree company.”
“We’d like to do this again, but because of the way New York State says we have to run things we have to put it out to bid again [because of the amount of money that we’re spending].”
The motion to set the opening bid date for April 14 at 2 p.m. was approved.
“If any tree company wants to re-bid it, they’re more than welcome,” said Robbins.
