REGION — As we have recently reported the number of active cases of coronavirus in the county have increased in recent weeks.

The number jumped from the single digits most of the summer to being above 30 since mid-October.

According to the county, the current number of active cases is 100 as of Wednesday. The number of deaths has stayed the same at 51 and there are 469 quarantined/isolated.

Public Health Director Nancy McGraw reported to the Health and Family Services Committee yesterday that community transmission is occurring and she and her team are working hard to keep cases isolated.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced new measures on Wednesday to help combat the rise of cases in the state.

Any establishment with a liquor license, such as bars and restaurants, as well as gyms must close at 10 p.m. They will be able to do pickup for food only after 10 p.m.

Indoor and outdoor gatherings have been limited to 10 people in private residences.

These measures will go into effect today.

Cuomo said they have been able to trace transmission to three main areas: establishments where alcohol is served, gyms, and indoor gatherings at private homes.

“The reason we have been successful in reducing the spread in New York is we have been a step ahead of COVID,” he said. “You know where it's going; stop it before it gets there. And you know where it's going by following the science.”

Cuomo added that it's up to local governments to enforce the rules.

SUNY Sullivan announced on Monday that a first-year nursing student has tested positive for COVID-19 at an off-campus facility.

According to a press release from SUNY Sullivan, the student is isolating at home and the college is working with the Sullivan County Public Health Department to undertake contact tracing.

One SUNY Sullivan staff member and four other nursing students are known to have been in contact with this individual, and they are being tested off campus and are quarantining at home.

The college is canceling the remaining nursing clinical classes that were to run on campus this week. Respiratory care courses will continue to run on campus through December 10.
