Richard Comfort, a lifetime Liberty resident, passed away at Roscoe Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on Friday, October 8, 2021, at the age of 88. The son of Ralph Comfort and Francis Burns Comfort, he was born on August 25, 1933 in Liberty, NY.
Dick, as he was known by all, excelled in sports throughout high school. Shortly after graduating, he served in the Navy as an airplane electrician for 4 years. He then began a 32-year career working for New York Telephone/Verizon, married Lorraine Cross, and started a family. He retired in 1988, ending his career as a Special Services Technician, and enjoyed a 32-year retirement, vacationing to Florida during the winter.
He lived a simple life. He loved hunting, fishing, gardening, and anything outdoors. He was a 56-year member of the Loch Sheldrake Fire Department, serving as chief at one point during this time. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He supported his wife, Lorraine, throughout her extended illness.
He is survived by his sons: Richard Comfort, Jr. and wife Jeanne of Coral Springs, FL, Ronald Comfort and wife Rose of Woodbourne, NY, and Brian Comfort and fiancé Elizabeth Ferrari of Ft. Pierce, FL; grandchildren Jennifer Comfort, Michael Comfort, Christopher Comfort, Dylan Comfort, Nicole Comfort; and his sister Janet O’Rourke of Liberty, NY. He was predeceased by his parents and his wife of 58 years, Lorraine.
Visitation and funeral service will be held at Colonial Memorial Funeral Home, 396 State Route 52, Woodbourne, NY 12788 from 12 – 2pm on Sunday, October 17, 2021. Interment will follow at the family cemetery, the Van Keuren Cemetery, Swan Lake, NY. Donations in Dick’s name can be made to the Van Keuren Cemetery Association, of which he was president for over 30 years.
