Roscoe Central to revote budget; Plans to reduce spending

ROSCOE  — After voters in the Roscoe Central School District made their voices heard on May 16, voting down the 2023-24 budget that would’ve included an 11.54 percent increase to the tax cap, the Board of Education met on Thursday, May 25, to discuss their next steps.

The open discussion featured various opinions from those in attendance, ranging from gambling with the 11.54 percent budget re-vote to crafting a new budget within the 3.23 percent tax cap.

After a three hour conversation about what the community thinks is best, the board and the Superintendent, John Evans, made their recommendation to craft a new budget that fits under the tax cap of 3.23 percent.

With the decision, there was less than a week to craft the amended budget before it is submitted to the board for approval at a meeting tomorrow night, May 31, at 7 p.m.

“There was great discussion and passionate conversation, but only a small sample of the voter turnout was in attendance,” Superintendent Evans said. “It is awesome to see the public come out and share their support.”

Evans emphasized the tough spot that the board is in, and the difficult decisions to come with the budget adjustment, but is hopeful that they can find a middle ground.

“Recognizing our taxpayers’ willingness to support the budget is a huge part of the equation,” Evans said.

If the amended budget is approved, there will be an additional budget hearing in the coming weeks before the next vote.

During the meeting, the merger between Livingston Manor and Roscoe was brought up multiple times, though at this time there hasn’t been any formal discussion about revisiting the topic.

Evans said, “Right now, Roscoe needs to focus on their budget.”
