Jeffersonville resident, Remedial Reading teacher

Sally D. Segar age 72, resident of Jeffersonville, NY, passed away March 30, 2023. She was a graduate of JYCS high school, OCCC and SUNY Albany with a Bachelor’s degree in English and a Master’s degree in Science and Remedial Reading. 

She was an exceptional teacher and taught Remedial Reading to many students in her career of 34 years. She frequently mentored new teachers and assisted in the coordination and administration of the New York State academic achievement tests. Sally had a home in Schenectady, but came home weekends and summers to be with her mother and brother Cleve. 

She could often be seen working and pumping gas at her family’s business, Segar Oil. Sally enjoyed traveling, sewing, interior decorating and was a talented artist. She loved watching professional ice skating championships on TV. 

Preceding her in passing were her beloved parents August and Hildegard Metz Segar and brother Cleve. She is survived by cousins Barbara Ruth Segar (Frank) Keery and Cathi Segar Ellsworth and many longtime friends. She was a respected member of her communities of Jeffersonville and teaching associates in Schenectady.

Visitation will be held at Stewart Murphy funeral home in Jeffersonville on Wednesday April 5th from 4:00–7:00pm. A Celebration of Life service, officiated by Pastor Ginny Bossley CLM, will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Jeffersonville NY where she was a member. 

Service will be on Thursday, April 6, at 1:00pm. A brief gravesite service will follow at the Presbyterian Church Cemetery. A luncheon will be held in the church fellowship hall, provided by The Presbyterian Women’s Association and community members.
