Santa visits Fort ‘Whoville’

Posted

Santa glided into Whoville shortly after noon on Sunday, riding Narrowsburg’s fire rescue truck, and was greeted by a cheerful throng of children who had lined up with their families to meet with the jolly elf. The Seussical scene was created at Fort Delaware by the Tusten Youth Commission (TYC) for kids to meet with their favorite characters from the Dr. Seuss book “How The Grinch Stole Christmas,” and take part in the character scavenger hunt.

The hunt asked children to find each of ten characters listed and get a letter from each one, then unscramble the letters to solve an anagram. Additional activities took place at the Narrowsburg Union, the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, Pete’s Market, the Tusten Town Hall and Tusten Theatre, and the Main Street observation deck in Narrowsburg.

The Tusten Youth Commission, chaired by Crystal Weston, planned the event and represented many of the volunteers populating Whoville and other locations of the day. The youth commission’s treasurer, Kelly Agar, said the event is a family affair for many who are involved with the TYC. Her husband, Jim Agar, spent the day portraying The Grinch, and the couple’s daughter, Maddy, played the role of Cindy Lou Who.

Music at the fort was provided by DJ Bill, encouraging the crowd to shake off the chill in the air with dancing near the fire pit that was set up for people to warm themselves—(the Grinch had returned Whoville’s log for the fire). A steady stream of families came and went over several hours to visit Santa and the Whos in Whoville, receiving candies and taking selfies with the characters.

Santa (George Kane) was then guided by the Lava Fire Dept. to Main Street, where activities were capped off with the tree lighting. The Yulan Brass Band provided the music.
