Save May 21 for the Youth Book Festival

Posted

Mark your calendar for Saturday, May 21, then grab the kids and head out for a special day at the Sullivan County Youth Book Festival! From 10:00 to 4:00 outdoors at the Ethelbert B. Crawford Public Library, you’ll find thirty-four children’s book authors and illustrators waiting to greet you, excited to show you their books and lots of free events for all ages.

You’ll find authors reading some of their stories in the Vera B. Williams story garden throughout the day (each accompanied by an ASL interpreter). In the morning catch children’s music by the Uncle Brothers Band on the outdoor stage and the Farm Arts Collective stiltwalkers dancing on the lawn.

Your family might want to visit one of the many excellent Monticello eateries for lunch but don’t leave town, yet! Come on back to the Book Festival to make some rhythm in the afternoon with the impressive hand drummers of the Percussion Orchestra of Kingston. The kids will want to have their faces painted, make something in the craft tent and dance with the costumed book characters. Any books of interest can be purchased right at the festival and signed by the authors.

For Sullivan County students, the Cross Country Reading Challenge Award Ceremony will take place at 12:30. Kids from each school have been competing to see how many books they can read and record. You can check the progress of the competition now by visiting the Cross County Reading Challenge page on the Sullivan BOCES website.

“Every child should love to read” is the underlying philosophy behind the Sullivan County Youth Book Festival. The goal is to create, sustain, and nurture a culture of literacy in partnership with our community and schools.

From the Sullivan Public Library Alliance, the festival planning committee, Sullivan BOCES and the many other gracious sponsors of the festival, “We wish you a happy Book Festival Day and hope to see you there!”
