Savor the Pie and Be Grateful

Posted

In these busy times, it is important to take a few moments to remember all that we have to be thankful for. I think we may even have a holiday to remind us to celebrate gratitude, don’t we? I know that by the time you read this, the turkey and the stuffing may be just a memory, but hopefully you’ve hidden a slice of pumpkin pie somewhere the kids would never think to look.

Go get that pie, make yourself a cup of tea, and find a quiet corner of the house.  Take a moment to reflect on just how lucky we all are. We live in a beautiful country filled with wonderful people.

Yes, electricity is expensive, but we have access to it all day, every day.  And food prices are high, but our supermarkets are filled with produce and groceries.  We are no longer looking at empty shelves as we did during the darkest days of the pandemic. Gas is pricey, but electric vehicles are becoming more available for all.

We have, we trust, come through the worst of the pandemic, and we have vaccines that offer some protection.

We must remember that our country has been through such health, economic and political crises before and somehow, Americans have always managed to find a way to sustain our best impulses, work to make a more just society, and help each other.

So life in the United States, while far from perfect, is still good. If Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl hiding with her family in Amsterdam during the darkest days of World War II, could write, “'I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart,” who are we to complain?

Here’s my Number One Useful Hint to help us appreciate all we have:  Step away from the screens.  Turn off your phone and your television, where the 24-hour news cycle bombards us with so much negativity.  Instead, pick up the Democrat and read “Down the Decades” and marvel at all that has happened in our part of the world. Read John Conway’s excellent column “Retrospect” and learn even more about the history in these hills. Read the local columns and catch up on news of your neighbors. Or just read a good book.  Or a good poem. Give your psyche a rest. Take a moment to fill up your tank.

Just slow down and breathe.

And don’t forget to savor that cup of tea and the last slice of that yummy pumpkin pie.
