School districts establish plans and schedule basketball games

SULLIVAN COUNTY -- With the go-ahead from the Governor and the Department of Health, the decision on whether to proceed with basketball and how that can be best accomplished according to the protocols that will ensure safety, resides now with the individual school districts who have the authority to act in the best interest of safety.

To that end the majority of the districts have indicated that they are planning to go ahead with a limited basketball season. There will be no spectators and no media at games.

Here is a brief rundown of what the districts have indicated so far:

Monticello, Fallsburg, Sullivan West, Tri-Valley and Livingston Manor are green-lighted for boys and girls varsity games. Roscoe will offer boys varsity basketball but not girls varsity. Eldred will have neither varsity boys nor girls teams. The decision was not made because of COVID-19 but rather from a lack of participation. Eldred will offer intramural basketball within the district.

The Democrat did not hear back from Liberty as of presstime regarding their plans for varsity sports this winter. However, Liberty High School is currently on remote-only education until February 18 due to positive COVID cases in the district.

Schedules have been established by Section 9 but are subject to change as a result of the weather and any incidence of positive testing that would warrant postponements or cancellations.

There have already been games moved this week because of a snow day that interfered with the six practice day sequence that is a prerequisite for any games to be played.

Here is an overview of what each district has on the docket (again, subject to change) for the coming week both home (H) and away (A).
