Slow Cooker Turkey Chili

If you're anything like me, you stayed home, ordered take out, and didn't do much during these past few months of quarantine. Do I regret supporting small businesses? Absolutely not. But do I want to eat healthier and love my body more? Sure do.

I joined Weight Watchers, a program based on daily points which correlates to your height and weight with a group of women at my school. We weigh in each week, holding each other accountable and motivating each other.

This whole program has really opened my eyes to just how much “junk” I was eating and just overall making me aware of a healthier lifestyle. I have to put my beloved chips and dip on hold for a little while just so I can get back into the swing of things and get into a routine.

The wonderful thing about Weight Watchers is they give you recipes to help follow your program, and there's a handy scanner which allows me to scan barcodes at the supermarket, showing how many points a food serving is!

This Weight Watchers turkey chili takes only 10 minutes to prep, and if you are anything like me, you have most of the ingredients in cans in your cupboard (that you hoarded when you thought the world was ending earlier this year).

At only 4 points a serving for 1 1/2 cups, it is well worth making and won't break your bank. I like to add lots of spices for additional flavor!

To make crockpot turkey chili, you will need 1 pound uncooked ground turkey or hot turkey sausage, canned pinto or black beans, 14 1/2 oz can canned diced tomatoes with chilies undrained, 14 1/2 oz canned diced tomatoes with garlic and onions undrained, 1 medium onion chopped, spices such as cumin, chili powder, onion and garlic powder, and salt and pepper.

I always begin by preheating my slow cooker, a tip I learned long ago which just makes food taste better. You wouldn't put meat into a cold pan, so why put it into a cold crockpot? This recipe calls for putting the turkey uncooked into the slow cooker, but I like to brown the meat with the onions and some homegrown peppers to bring a depth of flavor.

Here is where I also added seasonings like a 1/2 teaspoon of chili powder and cumin, salt and pepper, and some garlic powder. Next, add your beans and both cans of diced tomatoes along with your turkey mixture to the slow cooker. Cover on low for 5 to 6 hours and you're done!

It's that simple. I hope you all had a wonderful summer!
