Social media post puts Sullivan West community on alert

Posted

LAKE HUNTINGTON – On Friday, June 3, Sullivan West Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Bressler addressed the community in a letter about the middle and high school’s response to a now discredited, yet concerning, social media post that caused the excused early dismissal of a number of students Friday morning.

“This [Friday] morning the district was made aware of a concerning social media post. After consulting with the New York State Police, we were informed that there were no specific threats made to the Sullivan West Central School District or students. However, several rumors were spread regarding this post that created concerns for students, staff, and families leading us to communicate via a K12 alert this [Friday] morning,” Dr. Bressler said.

“We encourage you to take this opportunity to review appropriate use of social media with your child. If you or your child witnesses any suspicious activity on social media, please contact law enforcement immediately,” said Dr. Bressler.

No details on the creator or the contents of the post were shared in the letter.

Working alongside the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Police, the social media post was deemed a non-credible threat to Sullivan West.

However, all after-school activities were canceled for Friday afternoon due to the incident.

School functions resumed as normal yesterday, June 6.
