Structure fire contained outside Long Eddy

LONG EDDY — The Hancock Fire Department responded to a structure fire two miles north of Long Eddy on Tuesday, January 14, after a call came in at 1:21 p.m. from a concerned neighbor.

When Hancock Fire Chief Blaise Bojo and his team arrived, the fire was “well involved.” Bojo recalled that “we rapidly knocked down the fire and searched for people inside” the smoldering home. They found no one and no injuries were reported from the incident, but the one-story house was completely destroyed. As smoke continued to billow into the sky, firefighters dismantled the remaining structural elements with a chainsaw and removed the remnants of a blackened bunkbed with a pike pole.

Hancock Fire Department arrived first and was assisted by the fire departments of Hankins, Fremont Center, East Branch and Callicoon. Upper Delaware Volunteer Ambulance Corps was also on the scene to provide support. The cause of the fire is unknown and being investigated by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department, but Bojo said it did not appear to be suspicious.
