LOCH SHELDRAKE — After winning the NJCAA Region XV Championships last weekend, SUNY Sullivan’s Men’s and Women’s basketball teams will compete for the NJCAA Region 15 DII East District Championships this Saturday, March 4, at home in the Paul Gerry Fieldhouse. The Women’s Generals take on Region 3 champions Niagara Community College in game three at 4:30 pm. The Men’s Generals tip off against Region 3 champions Niagara in game four at 6:30 pm. Admissions for the games is $5, free for those with SUNY Sullivan ID.

In game one, Region 19 women’s basketball champions Harcum College takes on Region 15 runner up Westchester Community College at 12 pm. Game two, at 2 pm, features Region 15 runner up SUNY Orange against Region 19 champions Raritan Valley Community College. The winner of each game will qualify for the NJCAA National Championship.

“SUNY Sullivan is extremely delighted to host the 2023 NJCAA Men’s & Women’s DII East District Basketball Championship Tournament,” said SUNY Sullivan Dean of Student Development Services and Director of Athletics Chris DePew. “Our institution has a proud tradition of basketball achievement and success. We are honored to have the opportunity to host this year’s event.”

“SUNY Sullivan is proud to host the NJCAA East District Championship this year!” said SUNY Sullivan President Jay Quaintance. “We know that getting to this point is the result of great work by all of the student athletes, both on and off the court. We are extremely proud of our Generals and wish them the best this weekend!”

The 22-7 Men’s Generals earned their fourth straight Region 15 championship Sunday, February 26, by upsetting undefeated SUNY Orange 73-70 at SUNY Orange. The win moves them up to number 10 in this week’s DII national rankings.

“I am really excited for this team. We have faced some adversity this season but have stayed the course and ultimately it led to another Championship,” said Men’s Head Coach Brent Wilson. “For us to go on the road and beat an Orange team that was 28-0 really shows a lot about the resiliency of this team. This is our 4th Region XV Championship in a row since transitioning to the NJCAA DII level, and I am thrilled for this group to be in the same conversation as our previous teams.”

The Women’s Generals earned their second consecutive Region 15 Championship Sunday by beating Westchester Community College 65-28, improving their record to 19-9 on the year.

“We are playing our best basketball at the right time,” said Women’s Head Coach Ben Newberg. “We’ve won seven in a row capped off by Sunday’s Region XV Championship. Our sophomores know that their basketball careers at SUNY Sullivan are coming to an end and they want to finish out the right way with a trip to the National Tournament. Our game on Saturday will be a familiar opponent, and we look forward to defending our homecourt!”

Among highlights for both Generals teams this season: Men’s players Jay Alvarez and Jair Currie, were named to the All-Region XV DII First Team, Kipplyn Richvine earned All-Region XV DII Second-Team honors, and Jalen Minto All-Region XV DII sportsmanship accolades. In February, Alvarez became the 8th player in Generals program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. On the women’s side, Deivejon Harris was selected as the Region XV Player of the Year for the second year in a row. Harris, Barbara Bruno, and Brieanna Maple were selected to the NJCAA Region XV 1st Team All-Region, and Rosselys Bare earned the NJCAA Region XV sportsmanship award.
